Interprovincial trade was made easier between provinces and territories after yesterday’s (Wednesday) Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement signing.
The agreement includes thousands of products, excluding food and alcohol, and will take effect in December 2025.
PG Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Neil Godbout said while this is a win for the entire country, local businesses could face some challenges.
“This opens up opportunity for Prince George and area businesses to compete in other provinces, but of course that’s a two-way street.”
“It opens up the opportunity for businesses in other provinces to sell their products and services in Prince George. The greatest beneficiary will be consumers.”
Godbout added he knows local businesses are resilient, and will embrace the opportunity to expand their markets.
As for what more could be done to support local businesses, he said the lifting of barriers for food and alcohol, as Prince George has some significant businesses under that umbrella.
He believes this time next year is when we’ll start to see PG businesses accessing markets in other provinces.
