Taseko confirms accident claims life at Gibraltar Mine

Taseko Mines confirmed an accident at Gibraltar Mine, roughly 61 kilometres northeast of Williams Lake, claimed the life of one contract worker.

In a statement, they said the accident occurred in an active mining area at approximately 5:00 p.m. yesterday (Friday).

The mining corporation says no other injuries have been reported.

The site has been secured, and mining activity has been halted while RCMP and the B.C Coroners Service investigate the incident.

“We are saddened to report the loss of a valued colleague at Gibraltar, and offer our deepest condolences to the affected family, co-workers, and friends,” said Taseko Vice President of Corporate Affairs Sean Magee in the statement.

“Our primary concern is the health, safety, and well-being of our employees. Accordingly, we have halted all activity at Gibraltar until the accident can be fully investigated, and will make counselling and support services available to Gibraltar employees affected by this tragic event.”

The B.C Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals has also been notified of the incident.

The corporation said all Gibraltar personnel are fully cooperating with the investigation.
