Man suffers non life threatening injuries following bear attack in Vanderhoof

A man was attacked by a grizzly bear on a rural property in the Vanderhoof area Monday night.

The BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) said at around 5 p.m., the man was attacked while walking his two off-leash dogs on his farm. He was able to scramble under a barbed-wire fence and the bear ran off.

The man suffered non-life threatening injuries to his leg, and received medical treatment in hospital.

RCMP and BCCOS responded to the attack and conducted a sweep of the area. They were unable to find the bear.

The investigation included collecting and assessing evidence at the scene, as well as interviewing the victim at the hospital.
Officers determined that based on the location and circumstances surrounding the attack, it was defensive in nature and there was no continued threat to public safety.

BCCOS said trail cameras have been placed in the area, and any sightings or conflicts should be reported to the RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
