Desperate Chiefs outlast Spruce Kings to claim Game 3 win

Home sweet home.

That is probably the best way to describe the long-standing rivalry between the Prince George Spruce Kings and the Chilliwack Chiefs.

You can now make it 17 straight outings between the regular season and playoffs where the home team has come out victorious.

Tuesday night was no different as the Chiefs dug deep and outlasted the Spruce Kings by a 3-2 score in front of 1,322 fans at the Chilliwack Coliseum.

PG leads the best-of-seven second round series 2-1.

After neither team could grab the momentum in period one, Chilliwack utilized some quick strike offense to pounce on the Spruce Kings.

Boris Borin and Adam Boatter lit the lamp 26 seconds apart in the second period to jump out to a 2-0 advantage.

Prior to the intermission, Lucas Busch trimmed the deficit in half as he finished off a Cooper Faughnan pass, lighting the lamp against Chiefs goalie David Di Girolamo.

Prince George began the third with a key penalty kill burning off a four-minute spearing call to import blueliner Ozbej Rep.

Unfortunately, the visitors were unable to even the score as Chilliwack regained its two-goal spread courtesy of Aj Schaaf who slipped through a check and was able to re-direct a Dustin Renas feed past netminder Colin Reay.

Faughnan made the game a little bit closer as he notched a power-play marker at 15:08 courtesy of Busch and Trent LeDrew.

However, that is as close as the Spruce Kings would get as the shots were 28-28. Prince George went 1-for-4 on the power-play while the Chiefs went 0-for-2.

Tuesday’s outing marked the return of Spruce Kings leading scorer Tai Ushio who played limited minutes in his return.

Chilliwack also welcomed back Reese Shaw who was injured in round one against Coquitlam while Arjun Bawa returned after sitting out Game 2 with an ailment.

Game 4 is set for tonight (Wednesday) at 7:00 from the Chilliwack Coliseum.

On Friday, Game 5 shifts back to the Kopar Memorial Arena at 7pm.

Tickets go on sale at 9am today and can be bought online or at the Spruce Kings office at the arena.

Prince George also committed another blueliner for next season – his name is Anders Foyn Roen.

The 18-year-old from Oslo, Norway, collected three goals and 15 assists playing for Manglerun in the Norwegian U20 league.

Foyn Roen also notched two goals and six assists in 28 games in the Norway2 men’s league while also suiting up for the Norwegian U16 and U18 national programs.
