Public input on SD57 budget to go to committee of the whole meeting

Following preliminary 2026-27 budget talks during School District 57’s public meeting on April 14th, the next focus is on public input.

The School District received 67 completed budget surveys from the public from April 8th until its end date yesterday, which Superintendent Jameel Aziz said will formulate information to consider.

Aziz explains why they aren’t discouraged by the number of completed surveys.

“When significant cuts, changes or closures are proposed, then of course you get a lot of public feedback.”

“I think overall we’re actually quite happy to have 67 responses. Just the fact there are people out there who take an interest, even when things aren’t changing dramatically or nothing is being threatened to any high degree is a good indicator.”

The public input, including from the Indigenous Education Council will be brought forward to Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, before the final budget is brought to the Board on May 12th.

Aziz said they do try to give consideration to all items brought forward, and believes a lot of parties will get a little of what they hope to see.
