PG SPORTS WEEKEND WRAP–DEC 18-20

The Prince George Cougars are 21-11-1-1 as of the Christmas break, good for 2nd place in the BC Division and Western Conference. The Cougars whipped the Victoria Royals 8-2 (Saturday) before 5,560 fans to get a split of the doubleheader at CN Centre. An official scoring change resulted in Colby McAuley getting the Teddy Bear goal as he deflected a Shane Collins shot. The Royals won 2-0 Friday. Victoria is tied in points with P.G. but the Cats have a game in hand. The Cougars and Royals meet again December 27th and 28th in Victoria.

The Prince George Spruce Kings lost 5-1 to the Langley Rivermen (Sunday) in their final game in 2015. The Spruce Kings went 1-2 on the weekend as they fell 9-1 in Nanaimo (Friday) before posting a 3-0 victory over Cowichan (Saturday) in Duncan. P.G. will resume action January 2nd in Coquitlam. The 9-26-0-2 Spruce Kings are 15 points behind 4th place Coquitlam for the final playoff spot in the Mainland Division.

The Cariboo Cougars extended their win streak to six following a pair of victories over the Greater Vancouver Canadians in Richmond: 6-2 (Saturday) and 7-1 (Sunday). The 17-6-3 Cougars are tied with the Valley West Hawks for first place in the BCMML, but the Hawks have two games in hand. The Cougars will defend their title at the Mac’s midget hockey tournament in Calgary with their first game on Boxing Day.

The Northern Capitals female midget triple A hockey team went 1-2 in three games against the first place Greater Vancouver Comets. The Comets won 4-0 Friday and 5-2 Sunday with the Capitals posting a 3-1 victory Saturday. The 14-5-2 Capitals are in 2nd place, just two points behind Greater Vancouver. The Caps will compete in the female division of the Mac’s tournament in Calgary with play to begin this weekend.
