Missed opportunities cost Spruce Kings a chance at Game 3 glory against Nanaimo

The Prince George Spruce Kings are experiencing a power outage at the worst possible time.

Needing a win to keep pace in their Coastal Conference Final, the BCHL’s northern franchise was unable to crack the code against goaltender Eliot Seguin-Lescarbeau, dropping a 4-0 decision to the Nanaimo Clippers on Tuesday at the Frank Crane Arena.

Nanaimo leads the best-of-seven series 3-0.

Jack Rimmer opened the scoring at 14:21 of the first period for the Clippers capping off a three-way scoring play that included Hayden Fechner and Owen Davies to claim a 1-0 edge after 20 minutes.

Prince George had a golden opportunity to do some damage on the power-play late in the second period as power-forward Charles Beland found himself in the sin bin thanks to a high-sticking double minor.

Unfortunately, the key power-play went to waste as Spruce Kings forward Ben Vreugdenhil was penalized for interference a minute later, making it 4-on-4.

That proved costly as Tanner Bruender doubled the Nanaimo advantage lighting the lamp on PG netminder Colin Reay.

In the third, the Spruce Kings were granted two more opportunities on the power-play following interference and holding penalties to Will Subject and Owen Davies, but again, the visitors were unable to cash in.

Blake Jones and Maxime Lapointe added to the Clippers lead scoring twice nine minutes apart to put the icing on the proverbial cake.

This is the second shutout in three games for Eliot-Lescarbeau in the series. He helped blank the Spruce Kings in Friday’s 4-0 Game One defeat.

Prince George outshot Nanaimo 26-25 but went 0-for-4 on the man-advantage while the Clippers never received a power-play.

Game 4 is set for tonight (Wednesday) at 7pm from the Frank Crane Arena.

If needed, Game 5 will be back in Prince George on Friday at 7pm from the Kopar Memorial Arena.
