BC Highway Patrol is doing extra enforcement throughout the month of May.
Media Relations Officer Corporal Michael McLaughlin said not only are temperatures increasing so are highway speeds.
“The roads are a lot clearer, the day’s are a lot longer, and there are a lot more motorcycles on the road. Clear roads and motorcycles means we are going to have more dangerous issues happening as traffic collides when people aren’t careful.”
McLaughlin said there is a two pronged approach to this month’s campaign.
“One for motorcycle awareness. All motorists need to watch out for these smaller, fast moving bikes. Consciously look for them when you check your blind spots or when you’re turning at an intersection.”
The May campaign is also focused on high risk driving.
“This applies to everybody,” Mclaughlin said, “Excessive speeding is a real feature, impaired driving, distracted driving, seat belt use, we’re asking every motorist to really refocus when they get behind the wheel. When you’re going on the road, have you given yourself enough time so you’re not frustrated by any delays, you’re not trying to hurry. Are you watching for all the vulnerable road users that you share the road with, and are you completely focused on the complex task which is driving to make sure that you’re safe and your loved ones are safe.”
If you are a motorcyclist, BC Highway Patrol encourages you to slow down and ride within your skills and ability, consider advanced rider training, and never drive or ride while impaired, tired or distracted.
Motorists who ignore safe habits and choose instead to engage in excessive speeding or other high risk behaviors could face penalties.
“Including 30-day vehicle impounds, $483 excessive speeding tickets, and thousands of dollars in towing fees and high risk driving premiums,” McLaughlin said.
