Keep calm and bowl on: PG duo reflects on strong showing at Youth Nationals

A pair of Prince George bowlers are back home after a strong showing at the at the Youth Bowl Canada Nationals in Winnipeg.

The duo of Jacinda Trenholm and Kyra Thurston based out of Nechako Lanes, missed the podium by just over a single point after getting edged out by Newfoundland and Labrador’s Abby Tiller and Macy Priddle in the senior girls 5-pin championship this month (May 4-6).

The pair bowled 21 games where they ended up with a two-person average score of 467.05. Thurston averaged 242.33 and Trenholm 224.71 points per game.

Thurston told MyPGNow.com she will now shift her focus to the senior circuit.

“I know for sure that I am going to stay in it as a bowler, I have already been coaching for a few years so I’d like to do that as well. There is a lot different competition in the adult leagues so I am excited to explore that and see what it has to offer me.”

Even though her last hurrah at the youth level was very positive, she would have liked to have had a stronger finish in that final game.

“It was a lot of fun, it is every year, seeing people that have been there before. The last game was a bit heartbreaking because it was our last game’s in youth bowling. We did well and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner.”

For Trenholm, being in that high-energy atmosphere among the best bowlers in her age group from across the country, gave her an added confidence boost.

“I personally think it brings out a different side of most people when they are bowling. It is a lot more high-pressure and every game feels a lot more challenging than a normal game.”

“Being with top people in the country I think was an amazing experience overall just to be there. It was heart breaking losing by a point and a half and it really came down to that last game but it was an amazing experience being there in the first place.”

Trenholm is undecided on her playing future, but has her on coaching in the youth age brackets.

“I am going to coach some of the juniors and bantams next year for sure but as a bowler in itself, I am not too sure where that journey is going to take me.”

Alyssa Birkby and Emily Dunn of Southern Ontario claimed the gold medal while the duo of Mikayla Sanderson and Gillian LaMonica from Alberta took the silver.
