The College Heights Secondary School’s Concert Band took home the gold award at the 54th MusicFest Nationals in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
This is the second time in four years, the band has claimed top spot (the first time since 2023).
Music Teacher, Rob Hanigan told MyPGNow.com they were able to pull it off with just 21 students from Grades 8 to 12.
“I am so lucky to do what I do. These kids are just fabulous, they really just do all the work and it really came down to their focus and they pulled it off.”
“My kids going into it, we were tired, we had a long week and we hadn’t played our instruments for a few days, but my students really pulled it off.”
Hanigan added they competed against several private schools from across Canada that had upwards of 60 members.
“There are some bands their that had 60, 70 and or 80 people and here we are from Prince George.”
“There was ten thousand kids at the national festival and we pulled the gold.”
There were two kids who were in the band who won it in 2023 that performed again at this year’s event.
