Kelly Road grad signs with Roughriders

Off the heels of a Vanier Cup victory with UBC, Prince George’s Brandon Deschamps has signed a contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Kelly Road grad (6’0 – 215) had 1,191 yards and seven touchdowns on 167 carries this year for UBC.

“It’s pretty exciting; a very humbling opportunity.” Deschamps said “It’s pretty cool because the The Roughriders, ‘Rider Nation’ is a pretty big thing in Canada. Even growing up in Prince George there were Riders fans… so you know there is a lot of pride in the program.”

Deschamps was cut by the BC Lions last year, something he says was “tough to go through”, but after winning a Vanier Cup this season with UBC things seem to have worked out.

“The year I had was a pretty special year, both for me and my teammates. In hindsight it’s actually worked out pretty well for me; it’s been a special year and this is a special opportunity for me.”

He had nine carries for 79 yards and a touchdown in the CIS championship game.

Deschamps adds that he will be training hard this offseason to make the best out of this chance.

“I can’t take anything for granted, it’s just an opportunity and nothing’s been promised to me. I could get cut at any moment and I understand that. So I’m excited to do everything I can to show them that I can help their team.”
