The BC Coroners Service says an investigation has revealed that there were 14 motorcycle deaths in the B.C. between March 1st and May 31st of this year, up from five during the same timeline the previous year.
It says there were also nine drownings, which was also up from 5.
Recent motorcycle deaths mostly involved collisions with animals on the road and navigating curves.
Dr. Jatinder Baidwan is the chief coroner who reported on the figures.
“Monitoring speed and using signals while on a motorcycle and wearing necessary protective gear at all times can prevent death and injuries while on roads. Taking the time to refresh skills and update riding knowledge will help reduce the risk of rider error and lower the chance of crashing.”
When it comes to water safety, the Coroner’s Service also has some safety suggestions.
“Improving water safety can include simple steps, such as ensuring children are supervised near water, wearing a life-jacket and avoiding alcohol while boating and swimming.”
A study found that between 2015 and 2024, alcohol and/or drugs were determined to be a contributing factor in 40% of accidental drowning deaths.
