Excitement is ramping up for the return of Relay for Life in Prince George, now just over a week away.
So far, 48 teams and 271 participants have signed up for the relay, however, the event is still needing volunteers over three days, needing to fill a total of 493 shifts.
Director of Logistics, Victoria Bleecker explains why volunteers for an event like this are so important.
“Without the volunteers, this event simply wouldn’t be possible. There’s about 25 of us on the planning committee, and all of us are volunteers.”
“There’s just going to be so many people and so much going on. We are so grateful to everyone that’s helping in every capacity, and those that are helping informally.”
Participants of Hope Coordinator Jocelyn Kerr highlighted the fact that the volunteers cover a wide range of duties, with the relay being a 24 hour event.
As of this afternoon (Tuesday), 221 shifts have been filled for the event, with over 100 volunteers signed up.
Fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society has already seen some success ahead of event day, raising $54,313, passing the $50,000 goal, and have set a new benchmark of $100,000.
Cut off for volunteer sign up is on Thursday, though registration to participate in the relay will remain open until event day.
Relay for Life will be taking place at Masich Place Stadium from Saturday, June 27th at 8:30 a.m. until the 28th, ending at 10:00 a.m., with volunteers also needed on June 26th.
More information and where to sign up to volunteer can be found on their Facebook page or website.
