PG shifts into summer following rare tornado watch, sizeable rainfall

Mother Nature brought the rain on Friday as 50 to 60 millimeters fell in Prince George according to Environment Canada.

However, that is not what caught people’s attention – the northern capital was under a Tornado Watch as a couple of severe thunderstorms south of Vanderhoof came together and headed straight for PG.

Meteorologist , Jennifer Kowal explained to MyPGNow.com what they saw on the radar screen, that made conditions ripe for a possible tornado

“At a really intense precip state, there were loads of lightning on the radar signatures and it just started a little bit of rotation and one of the pockets coming towards Prince George had a key ingredient that would separate what is a severe thunderstorm and a tornado.”

As for the official start to summer, Kowal is expecting warmer than normal temperatures for Prince George.

“All of the indications in the seasonal forecast indicate that it is going to be above-average temperatures. There is not really that strong of a signal of how the precipitation would go – we are expecting above average temperatures (this week).”

Daily highs are expected to bounce between 24 and 27 degrees before cooling off with rain in the forecast by the weekend.

As for July, the weather models haven’t moved one way or the other just yet, but Kowal says its likely conditions will be above-normal.
