City issues $22.7M in building permits in May

New commercial and industrial building permits helped spur on a strong month for building permit values in Prince George in May.

According to a report presented to City Council at last night’s (Monday) meeting, the City issued 48 building permits, worth a combined $22.7 million last month.

This included nine permits for new industrial building permits worth a combined $6.9 million, as well as a single new commercial building permit worth $8.1 million.

Additionally, eight permits were issued for new single-family dwellings, worth a combined $4.4 million, as well as one new permit for a multi-family dwelling with three units, worth $1.1 million.

So far on the year (as of the end of May), the City has issued 152 permits worth a combined $92 million.

Director of Planning and Development Deanna Wasnik said for previous years, there were projects in the previous years that skewed values.

“With the stats in front of us for this month, you’ll note that in 2024 and 2025, they appear to be years with year-to-date stats that are quite a bit higher than this year,” she explained. “However, within 2025 and 2024 we had two very significant projects that somewhat skewed the building permit values.”

Wasnik said this included a new institutional permit in 2024 worth around $50 million for the new parkade at UHNBC, in addition to another new institutional project in 2025 with 200 housing units on Dakelh Ti Road worth $108 million.

“If we took those out of our totals for both 2024 and 2025, the numbers become quite comparable to what we’re experiencing for the values in 2026,” she said.

She added the building permit for the new acute care tower will have a similar effect when it is issued.
