Canada Games Plaza is set up to be “soccer central” in Prince George this week, with a pair of events surrounding the World Cup.
On Sunday, the City of Prince George is inviting residents to take in the final match of the FIFA World Cup together, with a Watch Party in the Plaza.
“First and foremost, it’s going to be a lot of fun for the whole family,” said City Councillor Ron Polillo. “You don’t necessarily have to be a soccer fan to enjoy the fun, there’s going to be food trucks down there, entertainment, there’s going to be activities throughout the day.”
The gates will open at Canada Games Plaza at 11:30 a.m., with kickoff for the final match at noon. An after party will follow the game, finishing up with the City’s first ever drone show at around 10 p.m.
“Sport unifies nations, and you just can’t help feed off that energy and that excitement,” Polillo said. “Whether you’re a soccer fan or not, you’re just going to, I think, be caught up by the excitement of a World Cup Final, it’s really a special occasion.”
Polillo’s Italian Team did not make it into the World Cup, and with Canada eliminated, Polillo says he’d love to see England win.
“England hasn’t won the World Cup in 60 years, so I think that’s for me, the sentimental favorite,” he said. “It’s the first time I believe, first time ever that the top ranked four teams have made it into the semi-final, so these are four juggernauts, so I think that’s going to be two great semi-finals and a great World Cup Final.”
England will face Argentina in the semi-final on Wednesday at noon, while France and Spain will battle in the other semi-final tomorrow (Tuesday) at noon.
In March, the City received $50,000 from the Province to put on the event.

Additionally, the City will be hosting a special “Soccer Spectacular” edition of Foodie Fridays this week.
This event will feature a number of food trucks in Canada Games Plaza, as well as live entertainment from a number of local bands and activities.
