BC Wildfire Service keeping an eye on weather at the Pear Lake wildfire

The Pear Lake wildfire is approximately 66,871 hectares in size.

Fire Information Officer Paula Walbauer said yesterday (July 27) the fire continued to be active along the northern flank both in the White Lake area and the Chasm area.

“The fire is mainly active on the west side of Highway 97. It was active throughout the night displaying rank 4 fire behavior meaning highly vigorous surface fire with some crown fire and short range spotting.

Walbauer said they have 190 firefighting personnel on this wildfire today (July 28) as well as 150 structure protection and 76 pieces of heavy equipment.

“We’re expecting a surface low to form over the Cariboo this morning allowing for an intensifying cold front across the fire complex in the early afternoon. Those south, southeast winds will strengthen quickly in the morning ahead of the front followed by winds bearing to the south, southwest. This air mass will quickly destabilize between 11 and 1 with extensive cloud cover or dry thunderstorms developing. Winds will diminish slightly in the afternoon.”

Walbauer said with that weather outlook extreme fire behavior is expected today and significant growth on these incidents is possible.
