Selen Alpay of PG receives B.C.’s highest honour

Prince George’s most well-known philanthropist is one of 12 people to be named to the Order of B.C.

Selen Alpay, who has been a Canadian Tire store owner for more than three decades, was one of the winners.

Alpay has built a legacy of community leadership and service across Canada and internationally, with a particularly deep impact in Prince George.

Recognizing unmet needs in the communities where he lives and works, he dedicates himself to supporting local organizations
including Big Brothers Big Sisters, the YMCA, School District 57, St. Vincent de Paul, the Prince George Native Friendship Centre, and the
Prince George Parkinson’s Society.

He has served on numerous boards, including the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation for the University Hospital of Northern B.C., Elizabeth Fry, and Baldy Hughes.

In addition, he has taken on key mentoring and leadership roles, contributing to major events such as the Canada Winter Games,
the B.C. Summer Games, Special Olympic Games and the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Known for his guiding principle to “do the right thing,” Selen has earned national recognition and received the Canadian Tire Award of Excellence.

Beyond financial contributions, he remains actively involved with the B.C. Cancer Foundation, volunteering with seniors, supporting food programs, assisting during wildfire emergencies, and advancing youth opportunities through JumpStart initiatives and the Pinball
Foundation.

His efforts have strengthened health care fundraising, community services, and inclusive recreation, benefiting countless individuals across Northern B.C., the Cariboo region and beyond.
