The Prince George Kodiaks are back in the win column, with a 36-23 win over the Kamloops Broncos.
It’s the first win for the Kodiaks since they put up a 65-6 win over the Broncos in week three of the BC Football Conference season.
Toby Plett struck first at a wet Hillside Stadium in Kamloops Saturday night, finding Andrew Brown in the endzone for a 25-yard touchdown pass on the Kodiaks’ opening drive.
A botched snap on the ensuing Bronco drive gave the Kodiaks excellent field position. Gavin Halvorson found endzone on a stretch run from six yards out on the first play of the Kodiaks’ scoring drive.
On the next offensive possession for the Broncos, quarterback JR Howdle threw an interception right into the hands of Kodiaks defensive back Dillon Piddocke.
Maxim Murphy tacked on a 23-yard-field goal after the Kodiaks offence stalled deep in Bronco territory, pushing the Prince George lead to 17-0 on their first three possessions. Murphy also split the uprights from 21-yards out in the fourth quarter.
The Broncos found the scoreboard in the second quarter. Murphy accidentally took a knee while gathering a low snap on a punt attempt, giving the Broncos possession on the Kodiaks’ one-yard line. The Broncos capitalized with a quarterback sneak into the endzone.
The Broncos cut the lead to 17-10 on their next drive, with a 21-yard field goal off the foot of Gabriel Gilmore.
The Broncos received excellent field possession again after the Kodiaks punted out of their own endzone late in the second quarter. After a short drive, MK Ellis found the endzone from about five yards out. With a good extra point, the game was tied with less than a minute to go in the opening half.
The Kodiaks’ regained the lead on their opening drive of the second half. After a big reception by Ben Fehr put the Kodiaks deep in Bronco territory, Plett found Andrew Brown on a quick out route. Brown made a spectacular one-handed catch, lost his defender with a nifty juke move, scoring a touchdown.
On the next Kodiaks offensive possession, Murphy missed wide right on a 44-yard field goal attempt. The Broncos were only able to bring the ball out to their own two-yard line, and with a quick two and out, opted to concede a safety for better field position.
The Kodiaks struck again at the end of the third quarter, with Plett finding Levi Nugent deep for a 33-yard touchdown pass.
Lloyd Heggen took a handoff and took off for a 75-yard Bronco touchdown. Unfortunately for the Broncos, a penalty negated the incredible run by the speedy receiver.
Heggen eventually got his touchdown in the fourth quarter, running the same play in the other direction and scampering for an 18-yard score. The two-point convert attempt was no good.
The Broncos were driving past the three minute warning, but were unable to get the scores they needed to tie the game.
The Kodiaks (2-3) are fifth in the BC Football Conference.
