Within the past week, six B.C. MLA’s, formerly under the Conservative banner, now sit as independents, roughly three months into Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s tenure as leader.
The new Independents include Delta South MLA Ian Paton, Kamloops Centre MLA Peter Milobar, Richmond-Bridgeport MLA Teresa Wat, Courtney-Comox newcomer Brennan Day, Prince George-Valemount MLA Rosalyn Bird, and Abbotsford South MLA Bruce Banman, who announced his departure earlier today (Thursday).
Political Analyst and former MLA Shirley Bond said we not only need a government focused on the challenges being faced, but also an opposition that holds accountability.
“Meanwhile, it’s just the daily account of who’s leaving and who’s doing what.”
“We really need to get back to basics. British Columbians need to come first, and we need to concentrate on governing, and making sure those are our priorities.”
Bond added British Columbians have been seeing constant turmoil, which doesn’t win elections, noting voters want to see an opposition that looks like a government in waiting.
“British Columbians are waking up everyday worried about how to fill their gas tank, how do they feed their kids, and how do they manage these issues.” said Bond. “That’s what needs to be the focus of the work that’s going on by the Conservatives, by the NDP, and by the Green Party. That’s what British Columbians want to see.”
Bond said it will be up to Findlay to see if she can keep the caucus together, noting the byelection coming up, and if she can earn a seat in the Legislature.
The B.C. Legislative Assembly is scheduled to return on October 5th.
