It’s just a shot away.
No, I am not talking about the Rolling Stones 1969 smash hit Gimme Shelter.
I am referencing how agonizingly close the UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team came to earning their first win of the 2026 Canada West season.
UNBC dropped a pair of close losses over the weekend – falling 3-2 to UBCO Okanagan in Kelowna on Friday followed by a heart-wrenching 1-nil defeat at the hands of Thompson Rivers.
The Heat jumped on the Timberwolves early, building up a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Maria Georgacacos and Megan Sun eight minutes apart.
However, the lead evaporated in the second half as Aimee Glasser and Maresha Manulak rippled the onion bag past Allyson Ford.
Georgiacacos then collected her second of the game in the 85th to put the Heat in the driver’s side.
UBCO outshot UNBC 14-12 overall.
In the second half of the doubleheader, Macyn Jolley scored the game-winner for the Wolfpack in the 82nd minute handing the T-Wolves another loss.
Johanna Rathke made five saves in defeat while Floor Ursem stopped the same amount of shots in the winner.
UNBC drops to 0-10 on the campaign and will be in Victoria and Vancouver Friday and Saturday to play the Vikes and Thunderbirds. Kickoff each night is at 5pm.
