Despite the low Canadian dollar, tourists from south of the border are not making their way up north during the winter.

Tourism Prince George CEO, Erica Hummel says they usually a spike in american travellers by the spring.

“The Americans we see come up between April and May. We did see a 55 percent increase of Americans last May which is significant and then they come back through here in July and August.”

Hummel says the winter sees an increase in business travel but also pointed out one sector is growing at a good pace.

“The sport tourism sector is growing and we are bidding on lots of opportunities so we hope to see more sport tourists in town and hopefully be legacy for the next several years in both the winter and summer sports.”

Prince George will be hosting a number of major sporting events in the next couple years including the National Aboriginal Fastball Championships in the summer followed by the Telus Cup in 2017.
