Tourism Prince George is looking to capitalize on the success of the 2015 Canada Winter Games with the launch of its SportsPG Speaker Series on February 23.
Tuesday’s event will focus on fundraising, including grants available to local organizations, tips on writing successful grants and how to connect with sponsors. Featured guest speakers include Michelle Layton, who was a member of the Canada Winter Games sponsorship department. Representatives from ViaSport and the Northern Development Initiative Trust will also be speaking.
Tourism Prince George spokesperson Leanne Schinkel says the goal of the series is to help local organizers build on the success of last year’s Games.
“This is about how Tourism Prince George can try to fill a gap to really make life easier for event organizers in Prince George – trying to hold this event and get people together and talking and working together towards building something even more amazing than the Canada Winter Games. We hope that this series helps us keep moving.”
Schinkel says the series was designed following a survey of the local sport community to determine areas in need of further development.
“We’ve identified fundraising, strategic planning, event marketing and volunteers as four really key areas of event planning that our great volunteer groups could maybe use a bit of a hand with.”
The success of the Games presents a unique opportunity for growth, says Schinkel.
“It’s all about legacy for us and really helping to continue to grow and keep the momentum going. The Games were such a success and it really charged people up about what we can do in our community.”
Tuesday’s event is the first in a series of four that will take place in 2016. Registration is free – those interested in attending or seeking further information can visit www.sportpg.com.
