New Solid Waste Management plan for Fraser-Fort George

The next 10 to 20-year plan on how to recycle and dispose of waste in the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George has been given the green light.

Waste Diversion Leader, Rachel Ryder says the plan will feature a brand new idea.

“One of the new things we will be working on is an illegal dumping strategy. So we are looking at problem sites that need to be cleaned up and educating the public on where to properly dispose of those items.”

Ryder adds they will be working with the transportation industry on how they can cut down on waste diversion.

“Right now they are our biggest contributor of waste to the landfill so we are working with businesses in our region on the recycling opportunities that do exist plus further educate them on what they can divert.”

The new plan aims to reduce the total disposed from 840kg per capita in 2014 to 570kg while increasing the amount of waste being diverted to the landfill from 300kg per capita to 570.
