The province took further steps protecting animals by targeting dog and cat breeders who have been neglectful.
They will be requiring all dog and cat breeders to be licensed.
Prince George Humane Society Executive Director, Angela McLaren says Monday’s announcement is a step in the right direction. “It’s really important those operations are regulated. We are seeing an increase in animal cruelty and puppy mills so those regulations need to be put in place.”
Local pet stores have also become more active on the issue according to McLaren.
“Places like Pet Smart and Petland are actually acquiring the animals from rescue and they are no longer requiring animals from places like the puppy mills. Even in Prince George, we are seeing a change and progression which is good for the community.”
Consultations with the BC SPCA have now begun.
They will take place this spring with legislation anticipated in 2017.
