UNBC Senate passes vote of non-confidence in Board Chair

The fallout from the Chancellor appointment of former Conservative MP James Moore continues to simmer on Cranbrook Hill.

On Wednesday afternoon the UNBC Senate passed a vote of non confidence for the university’s Board of Governors Chair Ryan Matheson.

“I think it’s unfortunate that it’s had to come to this point” Senator Michael Murphy said, who table the motion.

The move is purely symbolic and has no power to remove Matheson from his post, but Murphy hopes it’s taken seriously.

“If we are going to move forward and Mr. Matheson has said this repeatedly, that he looks forward to working with us and making UNBC a better place in the next 25 years. If that’s going to happen then we really need to see a change in direction at the highest level of leadership in this institution.”

He added that the Senate is waiting for the Board “to make the next move”

“We’d really like to see some sense that the board and Mr Matheson in particular has really taken this message seriously.”

Murphy noted that even if James Moore ends up becoming chancellor, they have serious questions about the whole appointment process that need to be answered.

The Senate motion was passed via secret ballot, with the vote breakdown going undisclosed.

Ryan Matheson has not responded to a request for comment yet.
