CNC to host first nations human rights speaker

The Human Rights and Solidarity Committee Speaker’s Tour at CNC takes place on Tuesday.

First Nations Political Leader and author Arthur Manuel will be the guest speaker at the college’s Gathering Place on Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:30 pm.

Regional Instructional Librarian, James Lovitt says Manuel will also be speaking about his new book.

“He wrote a very famous book that was published just last year called Unsettling Canada: A National Wake-Up Call. He will be addressing that book as well as the issues of decolonization, reconciliation, and new directions.”

Manuel says he has a simple message for anyone who attends. “I think what I want to see is Canadians stand up for human rights for indigenous people. Right now the federal government has not been following the recommendations made by the United Nations and that is what’s caused the impasse on land claims.”

He adds the issue surrounding land claims needs to be dealt with in B.C.

“I just think it is critical we deal with this simply because we are under a lot of pressure due to run-ins on Site C Dam and LNG plants. These issues put a lot of strain on the Canadian and B.C. economies and we need to solve the problem since it’s not going to disappear by itself.”

He was elected four times to the Neskonlith Indian Band from 1995 to 2003 and was voted into the Shuswap Tribal Council from 1997 to 2003.

The Speaker’s Tour is also run in conjunction with CNC’s Aboriginal Resource Centre.

Admission is free and open to the public.
