Junior hockey players in the BCHL now have a place to turn if their mental health falls off the rails.
“Talk Today” was founded after 20-year-old forward Terry Trafford committed suicide while playing his final season in the Ontario Hockey League with the Saginaw Spirit.
Prince George Spruce Kings President, Tom Bohmer says league members have been pleased since the program was put in place. “As far as I am led to believe at our semi-annual meeting there have been no negative comments on the program.”
The BCHL approached the Canadian Mental Health Association to break the culture surrounding mental health and substance abuse in amateur sports.
A mental health navigator has been established in each market. The outreach portion of the project launched in November.
