The Northern Capitals quest for back to back BC Female Midget AAA Hockey championships will begin tonight (Friday) when they hit the road against the Greater Vancouver Comets.
The Comets took the season series against the Caps winning 4 out of the 6 games, but Head Coach Mario Desjardins says one change just before the holiday break netted some positive results.
“I think we had some really good success in the last three games we had against them by playing a 1-2-2 trap. When Vancouver had a controlled breakout we shut them down in the neutral zone so I think we need to bring that in the first game.”
Task number two will be to shut down league leading scorer Elexa Pakozdy and fellow teammate Danika Pasqua.
The Capitals received quite a scare in the semi-finals from the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers in a series requiring three games with two of those ending up in overtime.
An experience like that should only benefit the Capitals says 17-year old defenceman, Grace Barlow. “It helps us build under pressure and to perform especially during a time where it is a do or die game and by pulling it out.”
Kenna Lloyd is in her second year with the team and believes going back to back would be special. “It would be a great experience since not many teams are able to do it and it would show how special our team is. It would be an incredible thing to be a part of.”
Game 1 is slated for 6 p.m. at Planet Ice in Coquitlam with game two noon Saturday and a 3rd game, if needed, Sunday morning at 10.
The winner will head to regionals from April 1st to 3rd against the Alberta champion for the right to represent the Pacific region at the Esso Cup.
