Hawks too much for Cariboo, take provincial title

The magical run for the Cariboo Cougars came to an end on Saturday after losing 9-4 to the Valley West Hawks getting swept two games to none.

In the first, the Cougars jumped out to a 2-1 lead thanks to goals from Reid Perepeluk and Tyler Ho.

Ben Evanish replied for the Hawks to keep it a one goal game after 20 minutes.

The Hawks cranked up the heat in the second scoring three unanswered goals from Josh Bruce, Ilijah Colina and James Malm giving themselves a 4-2 lead after two.

In the third, Perepeluk and Ethan O’Rourke would even up the score at 4 early in the third until Malm broke open the game by netting two more goals for a 6-4 lead.

VW potted three more in the period from Christian Bosa, Mitch Savage and Kabir Gill.

The Championship win is the first in the history of the Valley West Hawks.

This is the second year in a row the Cougars were swept in the Championship series. The team will now shift focus to the 2016-2017 season when they will serve as the host team for the 2017 TELUS Cup.

The Pacific Regional Championship will take place in Alberta on April 1-3 where Valley West will play the Alberta AAA Midget Hockey League champion in a best-of-three series to determine the Pacific Representative at the 2016 TELUS Cup, which will be held in Quispamsis, New Brunswick, from April 18-24, 2016.
