Prince George and provincial EI numbers drop in January

B.C. saw a drop in the number of people receiving Employment Insurance at the start of the new year according to Stats Canada.

Recruitment Officer, Gordon Song says a slight drop was experienced in the province.

“In January, there were about 53,000 people getting a regular benefits in British Columbia which is a 1% decline.”

Prince George also enjoyed a similiar fate. “There were about 1900 receiving benefits in January which is 30 people less than the previous month. The last time the number of beneficiaries went down was in October of 2014.”

The drop in receipents was due to a number of factors including more people finding work or residents being disqualified from their benefits.

Despite the decrease, the number of people in the province submitting a claim in January was up by 700 people which could boost the figure back up in future months.
