BC Hydro prepares to replace hundreds of power poles in Prince George area

BC Hydro is set to replace nearly 12,000 aging power poles across the province in the next few months. 230 of those are in the Prince George area.

Many of the poles slated for replacement are made of wood. BC Hydro spokesperson Mora Scott says their replacement is part of an ongoing maintenance program.

“Poles have a lifespan of about 40-50 years. However, there are approximately 70,000 wood poles on our system right now that have been in service for more than 50 years. We do know that these poles weaken and deteriorate over time due to things like weather, insects and wildlife and that’s why we’re out there replacing them right now.”

Scott says power outages may be a part of the replacement process.

“Pole replacement may require BC Hydro or our contractors to disconnect the power. Crews always take special care to avoid any unnecessary impacts to our customers. However, if maintenance outages are required for safety reasons, we will get in touch with customers in advance.”
