Snow basin indices below normal in Prince George and Vanderhoof

91% of snow indices are near normal in BC according to the provincial River Forecast Centre.

It’s a bit of a different story in the north with the Upper Fraser River West and East at 75 and 76% of normal while the Nechako River is at 79%.

MYPGNOW asked Dave Campbell with the River Centre on how this could affect potential flooding. “From a flood side of things there is much less water to come down that poses a risk. For most of the areas, the only concern is if we get an extreme rainfall pattern.”

The warmer weather during the winter is also playing factor. “It’s been 2 to 4 degrees warmer for most of the region in the past three to four months and a lot of the snow that has come melted or came as rain in the first place which means the runoff in the rivers have been much higher than normal.”

The transition from snow accumulation to snow melt is approximately two to three weeks earlier than normal.
