School Board Trustees to perform self-evaluation by August

School Board Trustee Sharel Warrington says it’s time for School District 57’s board to evaluate its performance over the last 18 months.

At this month’s meeting, Warrington proposed the board undertake a review in the near future.

“A review would provide us with an opportunity to evaluate how we are performing in certain aspects of our work. And then we would be able to say, ‘OK, this is where we’re strong and this is where we need to improve.”

But it’s not just about past performance, according to Warrington.

“Once you’ve done a review, then you look back at your goals and your areas of improvement and how you’re doing. So it’s a way of looking at ourselves and making sure that we are meeting our responsibilities, our mandate.”

She says at least one previous board conducted a review but “didn’t really follow through the way [they] should have.”

The proposal was supported by Warrington’s fellow trustees and the review is slated to take place before the end of August.

The board will consider engaging the BC School Trustees Association to help provide a structure for the review.

“They would provide the instrument through which we could do the review,” says Warrington. “They would provide a performance review template that we could look at to look at the various aspects of our work, how we’re doing in those areas and how we see our work.”

She says the review is important for both the trustees and the public. Warrington says it will provide an opportunity for trustees to discuss operational and governance issues while demonstrating their accountability.
