Active Aging Project offers Prince George seniors free activities

The Prince George Council of Seniors is partnering with the Native Friendship Centre to bring city seniors and elders a new activity program – the Active Aging Project.

“The project is going to kick off on Tuesday April 19 at 9 am with an information session at the Native Friendship Centre,” says Council general manager Lola-Dawn Fennell. “We’re hoping that there will be kind of a core group of seniors and elders that will take part.”

The program will offer participants two activities per month for the next year. Fennell says she’s hoping it will introduce seniors and elders to new activities and new friends.

“One of the monthly activities will be a physical activity such as walking or swimming or gardening and the second will be an information workshop and we’re looking at topics such as estates, community safety, financial literacy.”

Fennell says the invitation is out to all Prince George area seniors and elders – they’re hoping for at least a dozen regular participants.

“We’ll support the seniors and elders who participate in this project by accompanying them on the outings, providing reminder phone calls and covering bus passes and admission costs where there’s activities scheduled outside of our two buildings.”

Fennell says participants who want to pursue additional activities independently can get additional bus passes through the Active Aging Project.
