The Village of Granisle is still in shock over Thursday’s RCMP shooting which took the lives of an 77 year old woman and a 39-year-old man.
According to reports, Cheslatta Carrier Nation member Harvey Williams identified the two deceased as his ex-wife and son, Shirly and Joe.
Granisle Councillor, Tom Liversidge states both victims were suffering with issues related to mental health.
“I do know the people who were involved they were quite reclusive and withdrawn from the community and had mental health problems that flew under the radar.”
Liversidge is an ex-cop himself and went on to say he has great empathy towards officers in that situation.
“I have been on those calls and I know how difficult it is. You expect this in a major city but not in a small town like this.”
Granisle Mayor Linda McGuire has also issued the following statement on the incident.
Our community is understandably upset by this tragic event. We now must now allow the investigation to proceed and wait for the facts to be released.
To attempt with any certainty to ascertain the chain of events would potentially compromise the efforts of the investigation.
As a community, we will be lending support to each other.
