Harkins searching for coach, looking ahead to bantam draft

It’s been a busy time for Prince George Cougars General Manager Todd Harkins.

He is trying to fill the head coaching vacancy created earlier this month after Mark Holick and Harkins decided it was best to mutually part ways.

Harkins says the new coach will need to be familiar with the team. “The coach that comes in has to realize the team we have assembled and coach accordingly. He has to be good with the X’s and O’s with an understanding of the junior game along with the players on our team.”

MYPGNOW asked Harkins if there was any chance he would be behind the bench next season and came back with this response. “I will not be a coach at this time. It’s not what I want to do or was hired to do, so I will not be behind the bench, I can tell you that.”

The Cougars have received resumes from various coaches with NHL, AHL, and Minor hockey experience, none of which are from Prince George.

Harkins is also preparing for the Bantam Draft slated for May 5th in Calgary. “We have done our due diligence to find the players that are going to be in the model of the Prince George Cougars so we are continuing to sift through all the names and ratings we have compiled.”

The Cougars select 9th overall and are in a holding pattern on who might be available. “We have not made a decision on who our pick would be with eight other teams in front of us. We have identified 5 players right now that could be in our wheelhouse.”

The Kootenay Ice have the 1st overall pick.
