Prince George City Council supports Telus Cup hockey tournament

Organizers expect next year’s Telus Cup to run smoothly, especially now with some more help from the City.

Council agreed to give $58,000 dollars in kind to the National Midget Hockey Tournament. The money will cover things like ice rentals, on-ice decals, and traffic control.

“This is going to be a very successful event,” says tournament spokesperson Shaun Rice. “We have a lot of support already from the community, whether it’s in cash or in kind and tonight – that just gives us another big piece of the support that we needed.”

Rice says confidence in Prince George’s ability to host a successful tournament was so high, the city didn’t even have to put in a bid to host the event.

“When we had the Canada Winter Games, Hockey Canada was here representing the hockey part of it. They’ve seen how well the event was run here so they came to us and asked us to put in a proposal. And that just shows not only what the committee does but what this community can come together and do.”

Rice believes a successful Telus Cup could lead to even bigger events in the city, maybe even a Memorial Cup.

“It is a very big stepping stone to an event like that, that’s for sure. And the Memorial Cup in the community of Prince George would be huge for us.”

The Telus Cup will take place in Prince George in April 2017.
