The tourism season for Barkerville Historic Town and Park kicks off on Thursday.
Manager of Visitor Experiences, James Douglas says the May long-weekend has special significance to the community.
“Victoria Day has a special meaning to the original folks of Barkerville as Queen Victoria was the monarch for all of the original gold rush here and we want to celebrate with our 17th Royal Tea at the Wake Up Jake Restaurant.”
Douglas is also expecting a ton of American visitors this year thanks to the strong dollar.
“We’ll see an increase in the amount of people traveling from the northern United States up to Alaska since Barkerville is an important stop on that Alaska Highway trip.”
However, the sagging loonie could also be a blessing in disguise too. “The spin-off of that is we will see an increase of provincial traffic and Canadian visitation which is just fine by us.”
For the fifth straight year, admission to Barkerville is “pay what you can” until the end of May.
