PG connection helps the Warriors to RBC national title

Prince George minor hockey products and former Cariboo Cougars Liam Blackburn and Jake LeBrun of the West Kelowna Warriors are national champions.

Blackburn scored shorthanded in the Warriors 4-0 victory over the host Lloydminster Bobcats in the Royal Bank Cup final.

LeBrun and Bryan Basilico were dealt from the P.G. Spruce Kings to West Kelowna in January.

Matthew Greenfield earned the shutout with 48 saves (Shots were 48-27).

Blackburn, who has earned a full-ride scholarship to NCAA Division 1 University of New Hampshire in the fall, finished the tournament with three goals and four assists in six games. The seven points tied him for the tournament lead.

It is the first national junior A hockey championship for West Kelowna.

The host Red Deer Rebels beat the QMJHL Champion Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 5-2 at the Memorial Cup. Both teams are 1-1 in the four team tournament.
