BC’s Independent Investigations Office continues to investigate Granisle shooting

The Independent Investigations Office of BC is continuing its investigation into fatal police incident in the Village of Granisle on April 21, 2016.

RCMP officers responded to a complaint of an assault involving neighbours and attended a Granisle residence occupied by 39-year-old Jovan Williams and his 73-year-old mother, Shirley Beatrice Williams

The IIO’s release states that Jovan Williams “interacted with police and was subsequently shot.” Shirley Williams exited the house shortly afterwards and was also shot after an altercation with police, according to the release.

Weapons were seized during the investigation and their presence and use is being investigated.

Seven IIO investigators and one Affected Persons Liaison were deployed to Granisle for the investigation.

Investigators have interviewed witnesses  and collected evidence from the scene. If necessary, IIO investigators will return to Granisle.

At the invitation of the Mayor of Granisle, IIO staff participated in a town hall, attended by about 100 community members, to provide information on the investigation process.

Any witnesses to the incident are asked to call the IIO toll-free witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
