Victims of Crime Week kicked today off with a little help from the students of Immaculate Conception School.
RCMP Victim Services, the Elizabeth Fry Society and Native Healing Centre joined forces with the school to create a human mandala.
“The idea of a mandala in general, the temporary nature of them – they are created and they and they kind of come apart” Krista Levar PG RCMP Victim Service Coordinator said “There is a moment of peace and healing that comes from creating a mandala.”
“That’s what we wanted to capture here today – when you are moving from being a victim to a survivor, it’s a process and sometimes it takes that peace and that moment.” she added
Immaculate Conception Principal Donncha O’Callaghan says the whole school took part – almost 200 kids.
“It’s so important to teach children to look out around and see where help is needed, see who the victims are. Sometimes in the noise and the music we don’t always see that so the message is for the students to always be on the lookout for someone that needs help.”
Levar says this is their 7th year they have kicked off Victims of Crime Week in a way like this. Last year featured a flash mob in front of the police station.
Drone footage of the mandala can be viewed on MY PG NOW’s facebook.
