The provincial government has softened pressure on school boards, by refunding $25 million in administrative saving cuts across BC.
That equates to $622,000 in the Prince George School District, who were initially asked to trim $1.35 million out of administration this year
“Districts worked hard to reduce their administrative costs and we are pleased to be able to direct that $25 million back to programs and initiatives that will directly benefit the kids of B.C.” Education Minister Mike Bernier said in a release
SD 57 Board Chair Tony Cable is happy to have the money back, but is feeling a bit cynical.
“For three years education is hammered and money is taken out of education and boards have to clamour to find money. Then all of a sudden just before the election, we are given money.”
“I’m sure it’s all in the best of intentions” he added sarcastically
Cable says he assumes the funds will simply lower the amount of money they have to pull out of surplus reserves to balance next year’s budget. He pointed to initiatives around video conferencing for rural students which may get the nod now.
SD 57 trustees were set to give next year’s budget its final reading tonight, something that may be delayed with today’s news.
