Salmon River Bridge replacement project going to tender

Plans are on track to replace the Salmon River Bridge.

Initially announced last summer, the $24 million dollar project has now gone to tender.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone says construction will begin this fall.

“We are on track with the original schedule to replace this 61 year old Salmon River Bridge with a brand new much safer structure that will handle the increase in volumes and oversized transport trucks.”

He says they are also looking at the Parsnip River Bridge near the Mackenzie junction, where highway resurfacing has begun down to Whiskers Point.

Stone added that upgrades to the Highway 16 intersections of Vance and Ferry are also moving along. Long called for changes to those intersections were finally put into motion following a fatal accident at Vance and Hwy 16 in April that claimed the life of a 15 year old girl.

“We’ve completed the design work to make those two intersection improvements, parts are on order, we expect that the work to provide the dedicated left hand turn signalization at those intersections will be done as scheduled this coming summer.”

The Minister says they continue work to improve the safety of Northern BC highways, adding rumbling strips while gradually adding extra lanes and centre dividers in the region.
