Two more Prince George properties targeted for remedial action

The City of Prince George has two more properties in its cross-hairs for remedial action.

Councillors will discuss issuing clean-up orders on Monday for two homes, one in the VLA and another in the Hart.

2221 Spruce Street

A report to council says Bylaw Services has consistently received complaints about the home since 2009, in response to an accumulation of broken vehicles, appliances, trash and debris around the property.

The owner of the proper is deceased the the people living in the home are an elderly woman and her adult son. The report states the woman has recently suffered a fall and is unable to maintain the property, her son “appears to be both unable and unwilling to do”

City staff say the current situation is the worst it has ever been, with evidence indicating the home occupants are allowing transient people to take shelter in the yard without sanitary facilities, “which was clearly evident to the investigators due to the odour.”

Letters from the City requesting the property be cleaned up were issued on Apr 14th, May 6th and May 27th 2016.

The abandoned home is registered to a deceased property owner, and has been the subject of several complaints dating back to 2008.

On April 1st 2016, a maintenance letter was sent to Executor of the Estate to address the partially collapsed home. After receiving a requested extension and missing two deadlines, the Executor of the owner’s estate indicated they would not be able to take any action due to financial circumstances, and that the situation was unlikely to change.

Councillors will debate remedial action orders for both properties on Monday. Should the property owners not complete ordered work by the deadline, city staff may hire contractors and bill the owners through property taxes.
