BC Wildfire Service gives green light for Category 2 fires in Prince George

Category 2 fires in the Prince George Fire Centre are allowed once again.

Fire Information Officer with the BC Wildfire Service, Claire Allen explains what that includes.

“Two open fires that have to be two meters high by three meters in size and a lot of times this individual burning material in piles, burning stubbles or grass which is allowed within reason.”

Allen adds a handful of materials should be on hand before lighting up.

“Any individuals having an open fire need to have a hand tool such as a shovel, 8 litres of water in case it gets out of control, and to make sure in windy conditions to not burn and have plenty of personnel on hand so the fire stays controlled.”

Category 3 fires are also being allowed.

– The material can be bigger than two meters high by three meters wide

– burn stubble or grass over an area greater than 2,000 square meters

– burn more than two piles of any size

Anyone wishing to light one must obtain a burn registration number by calling 1-888-797-1717.

The announcement took effect as of noon on Wednesday and will stay in place until further notice.
