The provincial government is spending nearly $15 million to improve transportation for students around BC through its new Student Transportation Fund.
The Prince George School District could be eligible for more than $687,000, according to the Ministry of Education.
Eligible school districts will have to submit a plan to the Ministry by September 30, outlining how they will use the funding to improve transportation services for children and families. They will then need to report on the outcomes of their improvements. Those that charge fees for transportation services will have to eliminate them in order to be eligible.
The money can be spent on new or amended bus routes, accessible services for students with disabilities, reducing ride times and other transit improvement strategies.
“Our rural families have unique transportation needs and finding ways to improve service is a key priority,” says MLA Shirley Bond. “This funding would allow School District 57 to review their routes and enhance service. We look forward to working with our district to ensure that students get to school safely and on time.”
