Prince George City Council to shake up downtown parking bylaws tonight

Prince George City Council will be talking parking tonight.

As the City gets closer to rolling out its licence plate recognition system, councilors will vote on a series of bylaws tonight that will accompany the big change.

Motorists who park in the downtown core now have three free hours of street parking. It was previously two, but a loophole allowed drivers and many downtown employees to move their car a block every two hours to avoid a ticket.

That loophole will be closed with the help of a licence plate recognition. The system is costing the City $172,000, which includes new ticketing systems and pay by plate stations. The bylaws will be enforced from 7am-5pm.

Fines are also going up; most will cost $50, with repeat offenders being dinged $75. Parking in a disabled parking stall will now cost $100.

Also on the agenda;

-A report is before council on water conservation that will lay out a road map for saving water in PG – which could mean increased sprinkler regulations.

-The Black Clover is looking to shift to a liquor primary license. The soon to be opened Crossroads Brewing is looking for permission to open a lounge. Crossroads is under construction in the old Tony Roma’s.

-PG Fire Chief John Iverson will pay council chambers a visit. Council is expected to give local firefighters the power to administer naloxone to fight opiate drug overdoses.

-New guidelines for public hearings will be debated. After a marathon three session public hearing earlier this year, speaking limits are being suggested; capping individual submissions at 15 minutes with a 10 minute follow up.

-The Prince George Symphony Orchestra and UNBC: ‘Inspiring Women Among Us Planning Committee’ will also both make presentations.
