RCMP keeping a close eye on drivers in School Zones

Kids are going back to school tomorrow and Prince George RCMP will be patrolling School Zones to make sure they get to class safely.

Going faster than 30 km/h an hour in a School Zone between 8 AM – 5 PM could cost you three points and anywhere between $196 and $253.

PG RCMP Corporal Craig Douglass hopes drivers are always careful on the road, but especially around schools.

“Children are small and they can sometimes dart out, especially with excitement this time of year going back to school. They can dart out from a parked car or something. You just have to anticipate and you have to have your eyes on the road.

Part of paying attention includes getting rid of any distractions. Douglass adds those drivers, and pedestrians should keep their phones in their pockets and headphones out of their ears.

To reduce traffic congestion near schools, he also asks parents with older students to let them walk to school or to drop them off a few blocks away. Fewer cars make a safer trip for parents with younger children.

It’s also important you stop for buses with flashing lights. Fines have doubled, and not stopping will cost you $368. Racing by a crossing guard is also three points and $167.
