Hundreds turn out for 36th annual Terry Fox run

The Prince George edition of the 36th annual Terry Fox run wrapped up around noon today.

The weather held up just long enough for the hundreds of people walking, running, and biking the 5 km track that started, and ended, at Community Foundation Park.

People like Kayle Barker run to honour family members.

“My mother had cancer, I have aunts and uncles who have died from it, I have an aunt that is currently battling is right now. I was part of the wheeling warriors this year for the ride to conquer cancer as well so it’s something I take very seriously and it’s important to me.

Others, like Charles Stewart, do it to support the cause.

“Running is fun and I want to run here because of Terry Fox.”

The event was for all ages and abilities, spanning from UNBC athletes, active elders, and little ones like Shaylee Morel. She, along with her brother, raised just over $403 for the event.

Volunteer Shandy Woodhead has been a part of the event for 12 years. Keeping Terry Fox’s legacy intact is just one of the reasons she feels it’s important we run.

“To get the information out in regards to cancer and cancer research. This is kind of a fun way to do that involving the entire community in research and raising money toward his goals.”

Prince George is one of over 9,000 communities across Canada that participated today. The event’s official participation or financial numbers aren’t yet available.
